Local Government

Local governments in Scotland make sure that everyday services are working in their area.

Local governments are sometimes called local authorities or councils.

Local governments look after things like schools, bin collections, housing, transport, roads and social care.

The people who make decisions about what is happening with these services are the councillors.

Councillors are elected by people in their area to lead the local government.

Councillors are elected in Local Council Elections.

Voters number the candidates to show who they like the most and who they do not like as much.

Voters put a number 1 beside who they want as their councillor.

Voters put a number 2 beside their second favourite.

Voters put a number 3 beside their next favourite and so on until all the boxes have a number.
